Your first car? I
had a 2CV but it caught fire....as did my house in Bordeaux while i was
studying at the university there. Your
favourite parts of the south? The Solent and Brighton Your
favourite time of day? Anytime when the kids are asleep! Why
did you want to be a journalist? When I was 29 I met a trainee journalist
and thought 'that sounds fun' - it is. So, next to flying, journalism is probably
the best job on earth. The world is a wonderful place, full of tragedy and comedy
- journalism is a passport to every level. People are endlessly fascinating. What
are you most proud about? Helping to change people's lives for the better
- through a bit of publicity, especially uncovering bureaucratic bullying and
bungling.
At the other end of the spectrum, bringing a bit of joy and
laughter into the programme. It's a genuine privilege to be paid to do this job.
The BBC is a very unusual employer in today's cut-throat world and I feel very
lucky to work here. What
did you do before reporting? I had a short stint as a thespian in my 20's,
then lived in Paris for a few years working as a translator and interpreter.
I
was 30 when I did a Post Graduate Broadcast Journalism diploma. Did you know joining
the BBC at the age of 31 was the first ever full time job I ever had? It just
goes to show, it's never too late! I'm still worried I'm going to be found out
one day though.
