Pen-y-Ghent is one of Yorkshire's majestic Three Peaks, rising to a height of 2,276 feet.
It is composed primarily of carboniferous limestone and millstone grit, the two classic rocks of the Yorkshire Dales.
One of the most famous features of Pen-y-Ghent are the bare "rakes" on its western face which were shaped by a huge thunder storm in 1881.
There are excellent views from the summit of Pen-y-Ghent from where walkers can see trains on the Carlisle-Settle railway as well as Simon Fell, Moughton Fell, Langstrothdale, Cam Fell, Dodd Fell and Pendle Hill.
The "Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk" from Horton in Ribblesdale is one of the most popular competitive walks in the UK.
Safety - anyone attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk should be fully prepared and equipped. It is important to take detailed maps and suitable clothing and provisions.
