From
the majestic Clifton Suspension Bridge to the mysterious Silbury Hill, Seven Man
Made Wonders of the West celebrates the West Country's most awe inspiring landmarks.
The programme is presented by Amanda Parr, whose fascination with history
stems back to her degree course at Bristol University. She specialised
in the stories of Arthurian legend and the lives of the Anglo Saxons.
Amanda
loves the West Country and getting the chance to explore its many Wonders was
a dream come true. In this programme she travels along the Kennet and Avon
canal to visit a spectacular piece of engineering which allows narrowboats to
climb to the top of Caen Hill. She also visits the world heritage city
of Bath, and one of Britain's finest 18th Century gardens - the jewel in the National
Trust's crown. Then she recreates an infamous tug of war contest in which
the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel set out to prove that a propeller driven ship
could out perform a paddle steamer. |
