Elly's love of Sport made her time at the
World Service ideal, she remembers going to Wimbledon and
the FA Cup Final - all in the line of duty.
At Radio Humberside she became known as the
reporter who always got lost - she never was any good at following
directions!!!!
She returned to York in 1990 when she began
to present on a regular basis. Her first big break came in
1992 when she was asked to present the Afternoon Show.
During that time she met and interviewed a
whole host of show biz stars. Some of the highlights include
taking morning coffee with the late Sir Harry Secombe, being
stood up by David Essex and getting to meet Terry Waite not
long after he had been released from Beirut.
Elly is a huge U2 fan and has always wanted
to interview Bono - an ambition she is still trying to fulfil.
In 1996 Elly decided she wanted to go back
to her journalistic roots and opened Radio York's Selby studio.
"I suddenly had to become an expert on
power stations and the mines but it was a great time and I
made some great friends during my time there - who I'm still
in touch with".
That then gave Elly grounding to work on Drivetime,
which was followed by a successful two and a half year stint
on breakfast with Phil Bodmer.
She went on to be News Editor - a role she
combined with presenting Drivetime.
Now Elly is concentrating on her new programme
from 9 til 12 Monday to Friday. She's taking on the shoddy
goods brigade and the louts of lousy service, looking for
answers and explanations.
Over the years she has helped the station
to win a Sony Gold for producing coverage of the November
Floods in 2000 and she and Phil Bodmer won a Bronze award
in the Gillards for their coverage of the Great Heck Train
Crash.
Elly says that during her time as journalist
she has been privileged to share some moving moments with
those affected by tragedies such as Great Heck and the death
of York's Caroline Stuttle.
Highlight of her life so far - seeing U2 in
concert six times, definitely a fan. And the biggest highlight
to date was being at the Rugby World Cup Final in the Telstra
Stadium in Australia. For once she supported
England even though she is an Irish rugby fan.
Elly enjoys a day at the races and most live
sporting events. A keen tennis player but she needs to find
more time to play and she enjoys trying to keep fit - don't
we all?
