Bath Organic Group
Judges' view in
full:
The judges
think this is a community garden in the true sense of the word. The volunteers
have taken over the space of 10 allotments to save the area from being
turned into a car park or leisure facility.
They have
been working on the project for 15 years and it is run by a volunteer
base of up to 80 people who hold a gardening club on a Saturday morning.
They help
out in the garden and then can help themselves or share out the produce
that they grow. It is all-organic with a little water area for the duck
and a self composting toilet.
A variety
of shrubs and other flowers make up a series of "rooms", each
of which hold a different crop of vegetables, fruits or salads.
The garden
is self-funded by the volunteers who hold open days and sell the produce.
It holds
the purpose of a true community spirit, a safe haven for children to play
while the volunteers work or socialise with the obvious efforts of an
long-term and ongoing community project.
