I
was born in Ellesmere Port in 1971 and educated at Whitby
Comprehensive before going to Liverpool University to do a
degree in politics.
After
a year on the Merseymart newspaper, I qualified and got a
job as a video journalist for Channel One Liverpool - a cable
TV rolling news station just for the city. It was cheap TV,
rough around the edges, but great to work for. I became a
producer after 2 years, and news editor in my third year.
In my fourth it was time to leave.
I
badgered BBC Radio Merseyside for a job after bumping into
the station's news editor. Fortunately, she was looking for
someone and I joined the BBC as a local reporter.
Less
than a year later, I switched to North West Tonight and a
year after that I became the Consumer Affairs Correspondent
- which I still am today.
It's
a great job which changes day to day. One day it might be
an aspirational lifestyle feature, the next I could be chasing
dodgy tradesmen. The highlights are definitely uncovering
the scams, the rip-offs, the rogue traders. There's nothing
better than that. It's
also great when a viewer calls with a problem they hope you
can help with. That's a real sign of trust.
A
personal highlight was being named the Royal Television Society
Reporter of the Year in 2003. That was my first year in the
job and a priceless boost for my confidence in the early days.
As
for interesting hobbies? None to speak of. I love the garden,
the pub, good grub and the cinema and the occasional bit of
twitching..
