Shefali Oza

Shefali presents the forecast from the balcony

Shefali became Midlands Today's first ever weather presenter in January 1993 after being ‘discovered’ at an audition day organised by the BBC’s Multi-Cultural Programmes Unit which was looking for new presenters for Network East.

Shefali was spotted by the then TV News Editor, Peter Lowe, and the rest - as they say - is history!

Mind you it's all a far cry from the role she actually trained for - as a solicitor!

But Shefali, the daughter of a Nottingham GP, admits that was really her "safe option" if her television ambitions could not be fulfilled.

Every weekday she prepares for her TV forecasts by spending time at the Met Office talking to meteorologists and writing her own scripts and storylines.

As well as her full nightly forecast on the programme, Shefali also presents a weather bulletin on the lunchtime news.

Her roles has expanded over the years, with a series of successful features, including Shefali's Diary, Shef to Chef, Shefali's Gardens and her most recent achievement when she became the first female civilian to spend a week on the Royal Navy submarine HMS Splendid.
