They've
described it as their toughest assignment to date. In April
last year the Staffords were sent to Iraq to help keep the peace.
Apart from the difficulty of their role there was almost daily
danger. Three of the men survived a fire bomb attack on their
tank during a demonstration.
Whatever
the politics of the Iraqi conflict, the people of their home
county are proud of them.
In
November a homecoming march through the streets of Stafford.
But not all the regiment were there. Three of the men - Second
Leiutenant Richard Shearer Private Leon spicer and private
phillip hewitt died in Iraq in a roadside attack. Their colleagues
will never forget them.
And
neither, it seems, will Midlands Today viewers.
The
Regiment beat off the challenge of the three other finalists
- Carmen Nash from Shropshire who helped Tsunami victims
- Dot Griffiths who battled for the right to get the
anti-cancer drug Herceptin and Olivia Clarke, who had
to have her hands and feet amputated after having meningitis.
