Presenter Profiles - Priya Kaur-Jones

I'm a Northern lass at heart - born and bred just outside Leeds.

But I swapped Yorkshire puddings and the Dales for Cock on a stick and the Goose Fair when I came to the University of Nottingham and never went back!

Well, who can blame me, the Midlands is so lovely.

Priya Kaur-Jones
Priya is always busy at work - no time to dream about travelling the world!

I did a degree in Genetics for some reason - I think I wanted to find a cure for cancer and HIV.

But after three years the thought of looking down a microscope for ever in the QMC did not appeal.

I realised there was more to the world of work than research so I decided to become a journalist - it was that or become a nun, which is what I wanted to be when I was eight.

"In hindsight, I'm glad my parents dragged me to all the weird and wonderful places - its opened my eyes to the world."

On balance, I think I made the right decision!

I did a Post Graduate Diploma in journalism back up North in Sheffield and then started working in radio.

I spent 6 months in commercial radio in Leicestershire, then moved to the BBC and never looked back.

I started at the BBC Asian Network reading bulletins, then became the station's East Midlands reporter, and then moved to TV.

It has all happened so quickly, I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure its all real!

All my jobs so far have been fun. I love presenting the early news although I do have to set about 4 alarm clocks to make sure I drag myself out of bed in time.

When I'm not catching up on sleep I love travelling.

My parents were bitten by the travel bug and so were always carting me off to explore fantastic obscure places when we went on holidays - although I do seem to remember kicking up a fuss when I was about 16.

The thought of a month on the Trans-Siberian railway with my parents didn't appeal, not when all my mates were going to Falaraki!

In actual fact, I need not have worried, there were some delightful Finnish Paratroopers in the same carriage to keep me entertained!

In hindsight, I'm glad they dragged me to all the weird and wonderful places - its opened my eyes to the world!

I think my dream job would be doing a travel show, but then again, I think everyone fancies a go at that!!
