61 year-old Valerie is a departmental administrator at York University. A big Ed McBain fan, she has been writing for about 5 years and writes regularly for the Times Higher Education Supplement. Valerie's other interests include reading, cinema, cookery and politics.

Barbara Baker Barbara Baker
Barbara is a 73 year-old former secretary who lives in Scunthorpe. She attends writing classes for both short stories and novels and has completed two of her own novels, one of which is a murder story set in a market town. She loves reading, especially murder stories, Ed McBain, Dorothy Sayers and Elliot Roosevelt.

26 year-old Helen is a civil servant in central Government, working in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister. This is her frist attempt at fiction writing - she has only written academically before whilst completing a sociology degree. She's studying French and has just joined a women's football team.

57 year-old Peter Riley lives in Northampton and is the marketing manager of the Learning & Skills Council, a National Government Organisation. He's been writing for many years entering numerous writing competitions without success! His favourite author is Ernest Hemingway and he also enjoys cycling and watercolour painting.

33 year-old Paul Roberts is originally from Scotland, but now lives in London where he works at the British Museum. He's written poetry before, but this is his first attempt at fiction. He reads contemporary fiction and also science and history books. His other interests include live music, travel and cycling.
