"Plaid Cymru" means "The Party of Wales". It was formed in August 1925 and now has about 7,500 members.

Plaid Cymru MPs In terms of share of the vote, Plaid Cymru is the second largest party in Wales. However, of the 40 Welsh seats in existence under the new boundaries, there are currently only 4 Plaid MPs:

Elections:

Plaid Cymru won 8.8% of the vote in Wales at the 1992 General Election, 1.6% higher than in 1987. They retained all three previously held seats, and gained Ceredigion.

At the Islwyn by-election in February 1995 that followed Neil Kinnock's resignation, Plaid Cymru won 12.7% of the vote - 3.9% more than at the general election, representing a swing from Labour to PC of 6.95% (and from Lab to LibDem of 5%).

Plaid Cymru won just over 100 council seats in the last Welsh local elections in 1995.
