Alliance Party of Northern Ireland

The Alliance Party, launched in 1970, attracts support from both Unionist and Nationalist communities, but has not been successful in Westminster elections. The Party supports a devolved assembly with legislative and executive powers, like the German Lander, but it also believes that the people of Northern Ireland must decide their own future, and that there should be no change in the constitutional position without their consent.

The Party's Leader is Cllr John Alderdice and it is the sister party of the British Liberal Democrats. Its support is concentrated in the greater Belfast area, and its strongest representation is on Carrickfergus, Ards and North Down councils.

Elections:

Aggregating the votes received by the Alliance Party in General, European and local elections the party received 6.8% of the vote. In the Northern Ireland Forum elections the Alliance Party received 6.54% of the vote, giving them 7 seats.

The Party has so far selected candidates for 13 of the 18 Ulster seats.
