Jim's Crankophone

Start Game Start Game - Full Screen

How to play
The Crankophone displays two vowels. Listen to the words from the Crankophone. After each word sounds, choose which of the 2 vowels you can hear in the middle of the word. If you get it right the word is added to one of the lists.

At the end of the game you can print out a personalized sheet which includes your name (if it has been entered using the Teacher's Control Panel), a list of all the words that you collected and also the ones that you missed for you to have another try. To print the sheet, press the print button in the tool bar of the new window that opens and then close the window.

Learning
The game is an exercise in auditory discrimination of medial vowels, often the most difficult to hear and identify when learning phonics.

Using the Teacher's Control Panel
The panel is accessed from the main start screen once loading is complete.

By default the game will choose two vowels at random and will give words that contain one or the other.

The Teacher's Control Panel can be used to configure the game to focus on specific vowels.

Example configurations

e with o Sorting words into those that contain 'e' and those that contain 'o'.
e with random Sorting words into those that contain 'e' and those that contain another one of the vowels (e.g. 'i'), each new game may use a different second vowel.
e with mixed
up

Sorting words into those that contain 'e' and those that don't (a, i, o, u).

The player's name may also be entered and will appear on the printable sheet at the end of the game.

Options for Launching the game
Start Game The game will launch in this window with site navigation available and some playing instructions.
Start Game - Full Screen The game will launch in a new 'full screen' window that has no site navigation or instructions. For users of Internet Explorer 4 (or higher) the window will automatically fill the whole screen. This mode may be less confusing for children who may otherwise accidentally leave the game by clicking on a link to another part of the website or on another window on the computer. There is a hidden 'close' button in the top right hand corner - alternatively press Ctrl and W simultaneously to return to this page.

The game also requires a computer with basic sound capabilities as the player
is required to identify sounds as they are heard.
