Presenters, Tess and Sprocket, visit a dairy farm in the south west of Scotland. The farm has diversified and changed from producing cheese to making ice cream. There is also a themed adventure centre, built to attract visitors and help the farmers make a living. In contrast, on the east coast of Scotland where textiles were traditionally the dominant industry, local people now work in electronics.

Classroom Ideas

This clip may be used to convey the importance of farm diversification in order to promote business. A class discussion may look into the reasons why farms must diversify in order to make a living. Pupils may like to design posters to advertise the ice cream and themed adventure centre documented in this clip. Pupils could look at other local farms and suggest ways in which they could diversify to attract more business - they could create their own adverts promoting their ideas such as tourist walks, community activities and outdoor education centres.
