Percussionist, Alistair, explores beat using a range of percussion instruments. He plays four beats and then layers sounds on and between it to create a rhythm.
This clip could be used to help children explore rhythmic patterns. After showing the clip, ask the pupils to find more rhythms in the world around them - perhaps show objects on the IWB such as steam engines, kitchen appliances or animals and ask them what kind of rhythms they might make when working or running. Can the children clap or sing the rhythm? Perhaps group some children together and invite them to create layers of rhythm eg making the sounds of the steam engine - one child could imitate the running sound, another child could imitate the blow out of the steam or the sound of the whistle. Can they make it sound like music by perhaps adding lyrics to it?
