The musician Swapan Chaudhuri demonstrates how to tune a tabla, using a hammer to tighten the skin and thus raise the pitch to the required key. He explains that the tabla is always tuned to the tonic pitch. A singer or soloist will usually keep their entire performance based on a fixed tonality and the tabla player must tune to them.

It is generally assumed that most percussion is unpitched. However, most drums will have an identifiable pitch associated with it. If you have access to timpani or drums where the skins can be tightened or slackened, conduct an activity where the students have to identify the pitches to which the drums have been tuned.
