Paul Martin visits master craftsman Stuart Neil at home in the Black Mountains of Wales. Stuart shows Paul the time-honoured skill of weaving. Starting with raw wool, Stuart spins it into yarn, before using a traditional loom to weave a length of fabric.

Classroom Ideas

Could be useful for students wishing to start the craft of hand weaving or for those studying fabric production as part of a wider textiles course. The class could create a production plan detailing the steps involved in making a woven textile from wool. Students could then produce a simple design for a woven product. They could also carry out research to identify other methods for producing textiles using woven fabric.
