Description

Stella builds an electromagnet and discovers what factors affect the strength of the magnetic force produced. She starts with a coil of wire, before adding an iron core and a second coil. Eventually she adds more wire to the coils to produce an electromagnet with more magnetic force.

Ask students to design and carry out an investigation into factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet. They should vary and compare voltage, the type of core used and the number of coils. Student could also examine a range of applications using permanent and electromagnets and justify why each type of magnet is used.
