Classroom Ideas

As an exercise in sound design for TV crime drama, ask students to create a new soundtrack for the video clip of 'Softly Softly'. Print out the storyboard frame by frame and make a note of the sound effects that accompany each frame. Students should interpret the original soundtrack and analyse its effects - the original clip has minimal dialogue, music or incidental noise. The students should then experiment with adding different dialogue, music and other sounds to the storyboard to see how and why these might change the feel of the drama. As a follow up activity, students can record their soundtracks and add them to the clip, before playing them to the rest of the class.
