Description

This clip discusses the three scales or modes commonly used in flamenco music – major, minor and Phrygian. A flamenco guitarist, El Ingles, demonstrates how a Phrygian scale can be played by starting on the third note of the corresponding major scale and notes its rather 'Arabic' flavour. This is then exemplified in the context of a flamenco ensemble performance.

Classroom Ideas

Challenge students to find the notes of the Phrygian scale on a keyboard, pitched percussion, or guitar. Play the 'white' notes from E to E. Using an E minor chord as an accompaniment, ask students to create a short melody using the Phrygian scale.
