Famous titles and theme song introduce this extract from the first series of the sitcom which ran from 1981 to 2003 on BBC One. It's breakfast time in the flat and Grandad (Lennard Pierce) is watching several TVs at once while Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) looks half-awake as Del (David Jason) eats voraciously and reads 'Car Price Guide'. The humour in the scene focuses on Del's homespun view of the world and Rodney's odd responses. The series was written by John Sullivan and became hugely popular in later episodes. Viewing figures for the first series were more modest. This episode was first broadcast on 28 December 1981 and drew a 14% audience share.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be asked to discuss the contributions made to the comedy by Rodney and Grandad, and any techniques used to emphasise the comic contributions (timing, cutaway and so on). As an extension, ask students to write another minute or so of the episode, aiming to exploit these techniques.
