Description

Baroness Castle of Blackburn was a member of the House of Lords until her death in 2002. She first became an MP after the 1945 election. The Labour Party did not expect to win after Churchill had led the country to victory in the Second World War. The war had been preceded by years of depression though, and the people of Britain decided that they wanted to build a different future.

Classroom Ideas

This clip can be used in a discussion around the influence of politics and government on the events learnt about in history. In particular, this clip can help pupils think about how politics impacts upon the less publicised experience of post-war Britain and the curious fact that Churchill's Conservative Party was voted out immediately after leading Great Britain to victory in the Second World War.
