Classroom Ideas

This clip can be used to help understand the choices that directors and actors have in putting on a Shakespeare play. Before watching, ask students to look out for what the actors and director say about dreams. In particular, ask students to note what is said about Oberon and Titania being dream versions of Theseus and Hippolyta. After watching, ask students to discuss in small groups what they noticed about the contrasts between the appearance of Theseus and Hippolyta, and Oberon and Titania. How do these differences support the ideas that the latter are dream versions of the former? Ask students to discuss in small groups what the actors and director said about choosing the sixties as the setting for their production. How does setting it in the sixties support the themes within the play? Ask them how what the company said fitted in with what they know about the 1960s.
