Classroom Ideas

Before viewing the clip, ask pupils to find India and Great Britain on a map of the world. After viewing, pupils could go on to find out more about the history of the British Empire and its relationship with India. When did explorers from the British Isles first visit India in significant numbers? How did a trading relationship come to result in empire? The children could make a timeline, charting Britain's involvement with India, up to and beyond independence. Ask: "Are there similar empires in our world today?" and "Are there still links between India and Britain today?" Pupils could find out more about the life of Gandhi, using books and websites to gather information. They could script a short play about him and present it in school assembly.
