After German submarines began to attack and sink merchant shipping bringing food to Britain, the government needed to take action to ensure vital food and supplies would reach the nation. This led to the creation of the Home Front and the introduction of rationing for the first time. New jobs were created for women as a result. Focus is on the key trigger for and development of the Home Front. Presenter narrative, modern report and contemporary footage. Contains scenes which may upset younger viewers.
