Very strong magnets are used to hold workers in place as they paint ships, radar dishes and buildings. Each magnet is designed to hold a weight of 120kg pulling vertically down. To remove the magnet a lever arrangement is needed to prise one end from the steel. This weakens the magnetic force enough to pull the magnet off the steel.

Ask students the following question: "What affects the strength of a magnet?" Investigate material, temperature, demagnetizing fields and physical impact. Ask them to record their findings and show examples.
