Ask the class to watch the clip and discuss with a partner why the spots and stripes help each animal in their environment. Working in pairs, allocate each pair a plain animal, for example an elephant. Allow them to research their habitat - in this instance, the African plains and what potential dangers or threats the animal has (or provide them with this information). Ask the children to design a pattern for their animal which would enable it to better survive in its habitat by combating the potential dangers. The children can then present their ‘adapted animal’ with its spots or stripes to the class explaining how this new pattern will aid its survival.
