Musician Swapan Chaudhuri explains how mnemonics can be used to learn tabla phrasing. He demonstrates the onomatopoeic relationship between the various sounds which can be played on the tablas and their associated mnemonic syllables.

Students can work in small groups or pairs to create their own rhythm patterns, by exploiting different sounds on their drums. These sounds can be made from a combination of one or both hands, using a variety of possible drum tones.
