Emily Smith plays a traditional song named ‘Beggar Man’ to showcase Scots music. Nadia, Sandie and Milly brainstorm lyrics with Emily and put their lyrics to music by guitarist Jamie. The verses focus on each girl’s home life and how speaking Scots unites them.

Classroom Ideas

This clip can be used to write a folk song about the children's own locality and considering what makes them unique. There are strong cross curriculular links with music and PSHE. In groups children can write a list of what is special about where they live. Are there specific words or phrases or even places which are important to their locality? Use this to form a chorus which rhymes. Then develop a verse based on each person in the group, their interests and achievements. Finish the folk song by writing a final verse about what the group have in common.
