The presenter demonstrates the relationship between force, pressure and area using shoes with different sized soles and a sand box. The shoes with the largest sole area don't sink into the sand as much because the pressure they exert per unit area is less.
Students could investigate situations where the pressure exerted needs to be minimised with specialised footwear. Consider how this is reflected in the animal kingdom. For example the foot of a camel is able to spread force over a large area to prevent the animal sinking into sand.
