Elaine C Smith talks about the different dialects and words she encountered during her Glaswegian upbringing, her teaching career in Edinburgh and her panto performances in Aberdeen. She comments on the regional variations from the Borders to the North East. Elaine's favourite word is 'dreich ' but she enjoys the liveliness of Scots language in everyday speech.

Can be used as an illustrative example when studying dialect and accent as part of a spoken language study.
Can also be used as a starting point when studying idiolect. Students watch and discuss the clip focusing on how location can influence aspects of language use. Students try to identify words and phrases in their own language use that originated in particular places.
