Description

An explanation of some of the severe punishments inflicted on criminals in the past, such as imprisonment or transportation to Australia for stealing food. This sets the scene for a modern drama about crime and punishment. Two characters, Craig and Dan, are on their way to school, until they decide to play truant rather than face the consequences of not having completed their homework.

Classroom Ideas

The pupils could research punishments for various crimes in Victorian times and compare them with punishments today. The teacher could then discuss the need for class and school rules and compare this with the need for laws in our society. In pairs they could also discuss how the two boys should have handled the issue of their homework. Pupils can discuss why Craig followed Dan and how he could have handled the situation differently.
