Description

What was life like as a domestic servant in Victorian Britain? From a young age, girls were taught skills that would help them in domestic service. For most, life as a maid was all they could expect. Servants were poorly paid but conditions were better than in the factories and mines. The work was not as dangerous and they had food and a place to live.

Classroom Ideas

Pupils could be asked to identify the tools in the clip, and asked what they tell us about the life of a domestic servant. How would it be similar to today, and how would it be different? Which machines do much of the work of a servant today? If most girls in Victorian times were servants what work do girls do today?
