Description

An actress playing a miner woman describes the discovery of gold in the Black Hills. It is the story of the Gordon Party. The eviction of the Gordon Party by the US Army is described, but the gesture was futile as the Black Hills were then overwhelmed by prospectors seeking their fortune. The devastating impact on the Native Americans is also hinted at.

Classroom Ideas

The view of the women from the Gordon Party is that she and people like her were just part of inevitable progress. Consider the argument she, or the idea of manifest destiny in general, would present to back up her claim. On a scale of 1 to 5, ask the class to vote on how far they agree with that view and then justify their decisions. Students could imagine themselves in the position of the US Government and consider what measures they might put in place to deal more fairly with Native Americans.
