Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to introduce children to the many varieties of rocks and their names. Before introducing children to the names of the rocks, they could be asked to try and sort the rocks according to their properties: hard, soft, shiny etc. The teacher could then give children statements describing the rocks eg “Chalk is a soft rock and fizzes when vinegar is dropped onto it.” Children could carry out tests on the rocks, by dropping vinegar onto them, dropping water to see if they are permeable, scratching the surface with a nail, to discover the properties of the rocks and then match them to the statements given to them by the teacher.
