A musician explores the range of sounds which can be made on wooden percussion instruments by altering how she holds the instrument and how she strikes it. Instruments include a marimba and a vibraslap.

From this clip, we can take the idea of high and low sounds. Using classroom xylophones, have the pupils explore and demonstrate how the shorter bars make the high notes and the longer bars make the low notes. Have the pupils working in pairs. The first pupil plays the instrument and the second pupil indicates when the music should go higher or lower using either hand gestures, or pointing to a sequence of notes displayed on a simple graphic score. Encourage them to explore sounds moving in steps, contrasting with bigger leaps.
