Composer Debbie Wiseman explains her reasons for choosing certain instruments in an extract from a composition for film. A 'gritty' saxophone is chosen for an aggressive opening section and an electric guitar for an expressive 'eerie' section which follows. A harmonically unresolved ending leaves the viewer in suspense.

Ask the students to use ideas contrasting timbres to help with planning their own compositions. Students can experiment with cadences to create a feeling of uncertainty or suspense at the end of their piece.
