A demonstration of rhaita playing - a double reed instrument from Northern Africa. Musician Lahlou explains that the rhaita is similar to the saxophone, which he also plays. He explains that whilst some people may dislike the sound of the rhaita it can inspire people to dance.

The rhaita was also featured in the three 'Lord of the Rings' soundtracks, specifically in the Mordor theme.

Classroom Ideas

Using a copy of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, listen to the Mordor theme played on the rhaita. Set the students the task of working out how to play the theme by ear. When they have done this, agree on the implied scale which students can use to create their own 'Mordor' themes. Find a setting on a keyboard which corresponds closely to the sound of the rhaita.
