An introduction to percussion music and instruments. Shots of a snowy landscape are described in a descriptive poem; at the end of the poem percussion music begins to play. To create the icy sounds in this piece a number of different percussion instruments are used.
This clip can be used when looking at percussion instruments. Show the clip and then help the children to think of other objects that can be turned into percussion instruments such as pots, bells, bottles filled with rice or lentils or cardboard boxes. Perhaps ask them to bring in an object they would like to turn into a percussion instrument. Also look at the history of percussion instruments. Why do the children think they might have been the first instruments created? Perhaps look at the classification of percussion instruments such as idiophones, membranophones, chordophones and aerophones and invite the children to find the correct term for their own percussion instrument.
