An introduction to multiplication using square turtles to demonstrate how a multiplication fact can be written in a number of different ways. Six turtles move around to show how six can be represented in different ways as a multiplication calculation. This process is then repeated for different numbers of turtles.

After watching this clip, children could be given counters to investigate factors of different numbers. They could then record each combination as a number sentence, eg 2 x 4 = 8, 1 x 8 = 8. A challenge activity after watching this clip may be to use different numbers of children and asking them to stand in different rows to demonstrate the various factors of each number. Using the whole class, the children could be asked to work out how many times they can rearrange themselves in rows of different numbers.
