Seismic monitoring equipment around the world allows us to map the location and size of earthquakes as they occur, enabling us to predict the probable impact of future earthquakes. The pattern of the internal structure of the Earth, tectonic plates, and three main types of plate boundaries are all shown graphically.

Classroom Ideas

Provides a stimulus for diagrams of the structure of the earth and how this leads to earthquakes as well as the different types of plate boundary. Can be used as a stimulus for a discussion on the role of monitoring earthquakes. Explains how the Richter scale is measured using a seismograph as well as what the focus and epicentre of an earthquake are. Could be used as a way of students testing their understanding of these processes by adding their own audio to the visuals.
