A report explaining the importance of the RSPB's job managing water levels at the West Sedgemoor Nature Reserve on the Somerset Levels. The report considers the differing needs of cattle and hay farmers. It explains the need for compromise and how both farmers can benefit from carefully managed water levels.

Classroom Ideas

Pupils could watch the clip and identify the type of habitat which is identified. Pupils could then be provided with a variety of pictures of the birds which populate this area. They could also be provided with a description of each of these species. They could then be asked to match the picture to the description. Pupils could then be asked to design a bird identification poster to be used by the education team at the RSPB. They could be encouraged to present this as a branching key. If available, this could be done using an appropriate computer programme.
