Classroom Ideas

Talk about how stories give us an insight into other cultures and times. Discuss with the children whether it was fair that only boys could be educated. Could be used as a basis for discussion and persuasive writing. Write a persuasive letter to Yu Jun's father explaining why she should be allowed to study. Discuss whether the ending was a happy, sad or bitter sweet one. Children could be asked to write an updated version of the story. Structure a new sequence of events based on the story and use this as a story plan. Write in the style of the story using typical dialogue, past tense and time connectives.
