Description

Adam is a young offender (played by an actor) who has received a referral order for robbery. He goes to meet a Youth Offender Panel who questions him on his feelings about the robbery, his understanding of who it affected and whether he has any empathy for those who suffered as a result. At the end of the meeting they agree on the number of hours of community reparation and the amount of contact he will have with the Youth Offending Team worker.

Classroom Ideas

The class could discuss: "What are the benefits of volunteers from the community being involved in the Youth Offender Panel? If you were the chair of the Youth Offender Panel, what conditions would you recommend for the referral order? How do you think crime can impact on victims and witnesses? What are the consequences of Adam's crime for himself and others?"
