Editorial Policy Meeting in Salford - 2pm Tues 30th April - 5th Floor Quay House

Created on 26 Apr 2013

The Salford Editorial Policy Meeting will take place on Tuesday 30th April from 14.00 to 15.30 on the 5th Floor, Quay House, Salford.

The agenda will feature the following:

Censorship or Sensitivity

Recent news reports criticised the BBC for both censoring Jimmy Savile from the archive, over his removal from Desert Island Discs, and for being insufficiently sensitive to his victims by not erasing a Savile look-a-like from an episode of The Tweenies.

Does a sexual offence allegation or conviction against a BBC presenter necessarily mean they must be expunged from our archive and should we omit racist language from historic programmes before repeating them?

Unattended Camera & Mobile Phone Footage

More and more people are uploading video from their mobiles and webcams onto YouTube. Should this affect the way we consider expectations of privacy in a public place when using such footage from a third party or our own unattended recording devices? Should we pay for mobile phone or CCTV footage and how do we minimise intrusion with our own unattended equipment?

Revised Investigations Guidance & Guidance on Referral

The meeting will also bring you updates on what to do when material which could be of interest to the Police, or other authorities, is revealed during an investigation which is subsequently dropped, along with details of a new Guidance Note clarifying the existing practice of referrals to senior managers and specialists, such as Editorial Policy, Editorial Legal, Child Protection and Fair Trading.

The meeting is open to all BBC employees, no need to book. You are welcome to send a deputy if you are unable to come. You are also welcome to bring anyone else from your teams who may benefit from the discussion.
