Editorial Policy Meetings in London - 18th & 24th Jan
Created on 16 Jan 2013
There will be two Editorial Policy Meetings in London this month with identical agendas.
- Friday 18th January 11.30am -12.30pm Media Café, NBH
- Thursday 24th January 11.30am -12.30pm Conference Room (5th Floor) White City
The agenda will feature the following:
Untransmitted BBC Investigations into Serious Criminal Activity
The publication of the Pollard Review last month highlighted the question about how and when we should hand over our material to the police. It will be rare that a BBC investigation into serious criminal activity uncovers evidence which does not lead to the broadcast of a report but may need to be given to the police. So what should we do in this situation and particularly when the investigation is into the Corporation itself? Valerie Nazareth, Head of Editorial Legal and David Jordan, Director Editorial Policy & Standards will discuss this.
Naming of Operation Yewtree Suspects
Nine men have been arrested under Operation Yewtree on suspicion of sexual offences. A tenth has been interviewed under caution, but not arrested. But why have the media not named them all? What are the considerations we need to make when we decide whether to identify a suspect or not?
Use of Child Performers
The recent Ofcom finding against the BBC Two drama, Line of Duty, which featured a 13 year-old actor in a violent scene, has raised questions about how we protect children who take part in our programmes. The Editorial Guidelines require us to ensure their welfare is of paramount importance and should take precedence over any editorial requirement.
So what should we do if a child is required to appear in a violent scene or engages in inappropriate behaviour or language?
The meeting will explore these and other issues using a number of real examples from drama, comedy and current affairs.
The meeting is open to all within the BBC to attend and take part. You do not need to book. You are welcome to send a deputy if you are unable to make it, or bring along anyone else from your teams who may benefit from the discussion.
