According to Fife council 90 per cent of Fifers recycle their rubbish with 40 percent of all waste produced in Fife being recycled. Individuals are being encouraged by the council and other bodies to work towards a greener environment with a whole host of initiatives going on to encourage recycling and a greener way of life. ![]() Tins for recycling Kerbside recycling is now underway in most of the kingdom encouraging householders to think recycle rather than rubbish. There are over 330 recycling points and centres spread across Fife to encourage recycling beyond the kerbside. A joint venture launched by Friends of the Earth Fife and Sustainable Communities Initiative is encouraging residents and shopkeepers in Burntisland and Kinghorn to follow in the footsteps of Modbury in Devon to rid the towns of plastic bags. Shopkeepers are encouraging customers to use existing bags or offering environmentally friendly alternatives. The Sustainable Communities Initiative also look after the UK's first 'earthship' based on the shores of Kinghorn Loch. The 'earthship' is open to the public for education and research purposes. One of the main priorities for Fife council is “making Fife the leading green council in Scotland”. 50 percent of Fife Council electricity consumption currently comes from renewable sources, wind power and small-scale hydroelectric schemes. Fife council have also introduced conversion of waste methane gas to electricity at two landfill sites. Freecycle groups are also helping Fifers recycle unwanted items. Freecycle groups are established in East, West and Central Fife to let people get rid of items they don’t want and pick up those they do for free. Schoolchildren are also taking part in Fife’s green revolution with the eco-school awards and green flags being awarded to those schools that are promoting environmental action and awareness. Cardenden in Fife is taking centre stage in the green changes with plans for a wind farm nearby being given consent as well as Cardenden being the planned location for Scotland’s first eco village.
