For some of the veterans it was the first time they'd stepped foot on the Normandy beaches since the war ended. ![]() Our reporter Angelina Socci and cameraman Andy Mayer travelled back to France with a group of six veterans from Nottingham. The trip was organised by the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Old Comrades Association and with the youngest being 84 many believe it will the last time they return to battlefields. The veterans all remember all too well where they were on the 6th June 1944 when more than 300,000 Alllied troops stormed the coastline. Les Allsopp, a paratrooper who was involved in the attack on Breville Battery, wanted to remember a comrade who died next to him. Ron Thorpe, who served with the Royal Marines, was wounded on a landing craft. last updated: 08/06/2009 at 18:15 SEE ALSOYou are in: East Midlands Today > Features > D-Day Veterans return to Normandy TOP STORIES
