PresentersYou are in: East Midlands Today > Presenters > Helen Astle ![]() Helen AstleI always knew I wanted to be a journalist, as a child I asked far too many questions for my parents to cope with. I can remember running home from school to read the newspapers and watch the news - no Blue Peter for me. My sister jokes that my earliest pin up was John Craven! After university I managed to get one week off work experience at Radio Nottingham and have never really looked back since. Whilst juggling a 9-2am shift answering the phones I also picked up freelance work in the newsroom. From Radio Nottingham it was then a hop, skip and a jump to Radio Leicester where I was taught how to read the news, produce programmes and drive the radiocar - not an easy feat! At that time Radio Leicester was based in one of the worst buildings in the BBC. We were in floors eight and nine of a tower block, often the lifts would break, which would mean you had to time running to the loo in the nearby shopping mall with reading the news on the hour. It was so hot in the summer the editor would go and buy us all (after a little persuasion) ice creams so we could cool down. I love being a journalist, you never know where you're going to be, or what you're going to be doing, from tank driving at Mallory Park to doing lives from Westminster, it's a great job! Top 10 List1 Best Song Ever - The Fugees "Killing Me Softly" - it reminds me of being in Sixth Form, the summer of our A-Levels was fantastic. 2 Best TV Show Ever - Sex and the City - the shoes, the clothes, New York - what girl couldn't love it? ![]() 3 Best personal TV moment - Doing a live from College Green outside Westminster and with 4 minutes to go my ear-piece died, which meant although everyone could see and hear me, I couldn't hear a thing - I had lots to say just no idea when to say it! I had to rely on frantic hand signals from my cameraman (who had a mobile phone clasped to his ear) as to when to talk! 4 Best place in England - Anywhere near the sea! 5 Favourite / worst food - Favourite is probably a curry, though nothing too hot! Worst is definitely my Mums scrambled eggs - she used to make it for me when I was ill, just dire. 6 Favourite / worst drink - Favourite is probably rose and worst is coffee, I really love the idea of going for coffee and I love the smell, I just fall down at the last hurdle, the taste! 7 Favourite / worst animals - I love dogs and have two large, boisterous labradors. I have a phobia of frogs and have even had to get my neighbours to get one out of my garden for me. 8 Favourite name for a boy / girl - Edward and Matilda 9 Favourite sport / least favourite sport - Being a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I love skiing, though I'm not very good at it. I hate hurdling - bad memories of school sports day. 10 Favourite politician / historical figure - Condoleeza Rice last updated: 22/02/2009 at 13:44 SEE ALSOYou are in: East Midlands Today > Presenters > Helen Astle TOP STORIES
