With Chloe safely asleep upstairs, Sonia ransacks the house for cash. Dot frantically knocks at the door. She shouts through the letterbox that the Millers will call the police unless Sonia lets her in.
Sonia opens the door to Dot, who demands to know where Chloe is. Sonia claims that the baby's not in the house, and that she's just woken up. But she's forced to come clean when Dot spies a toy on the floor.
Sonia admits that Chloe's asleep upstairs. Dot makes it clear that she's there to retrieve the baby for the Millers. Sonia's distressed by this and argues that as Chloe's mother she can look after her.
Sonia panics when she hears a police siren and sees the crowd gathered outside. The police aren't on their way, but the Millers have given Dot a deadline. She has 15 minutes to persuade Sonia to surrender Chloe.
Dot tries to sit Sonia down for a chat, but Sonia's agitated. She explains that the Millers planned to take Chloe away without granting her a last visit. She's also upset at how much Chloe's changed since she was born.
She recounts how she was unable to part with Chloe when she visited the Millers' house. Dot argues that Sonia can't change her mind now that Chloe's been adopted. She has no rights as Chloe's mother.
When Dot instructs Sonia to take Chloe outside, she threatens to abscond with the baby. She begs Dot to stall the police so she can escape via the back door. Sonia's furious when Dot refuses to help her.
Dot points out that Sonia has missed out on 18 months of Chloe's life. She hardly knows her own daughter now. Despite her pleas, Dot refuses to help Sonia - she'll call the police herself if the kidnap continues.
Sonia's still determined to take Chloe. Dot argues that she's learnt the mistake of turning a blind eye. She warns her that if she abducts Chloe, she'll have a police record which could ruin her nursing career.
They check on Chloe upstairs. Sonia begins to sob inconsolably, but Dot tries to reassure her that everything will be alright. Dot's quite clear that Sonia must return Chloe, but they only have five minutes left.
Sonia attempts to call her mum for advice. No-one's home and she leaves a message to contact her urgently. Dot doubts Carol's ability to solve Sonia's problems, what she needs is some inner strength.
Sonia's angry with Dot for living her life by the bible. Dot's mortified when she throws the book across the room. Sonia wonders why Dot was able to help Nick but she won't help her abduct Chloe.
Dot explains that she helped Nick because she had something to make up for. She aborted a baby girl when she was 21 years old. Her husband Charlie had forced her to terminate the pregnancy against her wishes.
Dot describes how guilty she felt after the abortion. She thought she had put it all behind her until the christening gown was found. She wishes she had kept the baby, she's left feeling cold and empty.
Sonia wonders whether she should have been a single mum like Carol. She confides in Dot that Carol was furious about the adoption. Dot reassures Sonia that Chloe will have a good life with the Millers.
Just as the Millers call to hurry Sonia, Chloe begins to cry. When Sonia's unable to console her she knows it's time to give her up. Tearfully, she passes Chloe over. On returning to the house she hears the phone ring.
